Sophos Home Premium

Post by Irabbit » July 2nd, 2018, 8:49 am

Any thoughts on using Sophos Home Premium vs Sophos Home Free. Looks like the regular price for the premium version is $50 per year for each computer to be protected. Is there any information to support the effectiveness of the the extra protection that is claimed to be provided?

Now I see the price is good for up to 10 devices and is currently being offered for $40.

I decided to upgrade to Sophos Home Premium. I haven't been using it too long, but this morning I downloaded copies of my checks that have tax implications. I then encrypt them. When I tried to do the encryption, it was blocked by Sophos ransomware protection. It blocks any encryption effort that is being made. After looking Sophos over and checking various things to see I could figure out how to get Sophos to allow this activity for this progtram, I found an exception box to allow local programs that don't play well with Sophos premium protection. I guess what I am trying to say is that Sophos seems to do a good job of protecting against this type of attack where some malware tries to encrypt your files and then charge you to unencrypt them. Caught me by surprise when I tried to get my files encrypted before I found how to allow the encryption using my program. It pops up a window showing the files trying to be encrypted and blocks the action.

Got this answer about the Ransomware protection from Sophos support:

Thank you for contacting Sophos Home support.

At this time the only way to stop the Ransomware feature from blocking the encryption is to temporarily disable this feature.

Adding the encryption software to the exceptions list will not prevent Sophos Home from detecting files from being encrypted as the files being encrypted are external from the software set in the exception. With that being said, One thing you could try would be to also set an exception for the files/folders you wish to encrypt and see if that allows them to be encrypted. If this also fails, then the only other option will be to disable the Ransomware feature.
